Catch quota trial success highlighted
Catch quota trials, which have significantly helped to reduce the amount of fish being thrown away at sea, were featured on Channel 4 News on Monday 25 June.
We are operating the trials on behalf of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) as part of the UK’s initiative to tackle the problem of discarding fish – where dead fish are thrown away at sea if fishermen have no quota left for a particular species.
Our Catch Quota Trial Team and Fisheries Minister Richard Benyon were interviewed as part of the piece, which also included footage from a Scarborough-based vessel taking part in the scheme. It is available to watch online on the Channel 4 website.
More information on the success of catch quota trials in 2011 is available in our news story Discards reduced through catch quota trial.
